The Special Rapporteur on the situation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, Professor James Anaya, will visit Peru from 17 to 19 June 2009. The purpose of the visit is to examine the situation of the indigenous peoples in the country, in particular in relation to the confrontations over recent weeks. The visit follows an invitation by the Government of Peru to the Special Rapporteur and by several indigenous organizations and groups in the country to carry out a visit.
The Special Rapporteur will hold meetings with government representatives, members of the national Congress, the Public Defenders office, and indigenous peoples and organizations.
On 26 March 2008, the Human Rights Council appointed Professor S. James Anaya (United States of America), for an initial period of three years. Professor Anaya is the James J. Lenoir Professor of Human Rights Law and Policy at the University of Arizona (United States).
